TERRITORY

Principe island, with a surface area of 142 m² is smaller than São Tomé island. It is located about 140 km to Northeast from São Tome island. It is an independent territory with its own political and administrative status. Therefore, it has its own capital, Santo Antonio. This island has a highly inactive volcano with more than three million of years, surrounded by small islets, such as ilhéu Bom Bom, ilhéu Caroço, Tinhosa Grande and Tinhosa Pequena. Príncipe is a different island and its sustainability is at the center of all attention.

HISTORY

At the time of its discovery, Principe island was called Santo Antonio island.  It was bequeathed to the Crown Prince, António Carneiro on  March 18th 1500. It was necessary to wait until the 18th century - two centuries later- for the Portuguese kingdom to repossess the Island. During this period, Principe was populated by slaves coming from African coast and they started the cultivation of sugar cane.

Subsequently, during the 20th century, the famous physicist, Albert Einstein travelled to Principe island to prove his Theory of General Relativity. In fact, eager to prove it by observing a solar eclipse, he travelled to this island, where an eclipse that reached its peak had occurred on 29 th  May 1919.

POPULATION

Lunguyé, also called Príncipense, is the most spoken criole language in Principe and Forro is mainly spoken in Sao Tome.

FAUNE ET FLORE

Obô forest area occupies the Southeast part on the Principe island. The Obô forest received the laudatory Biosphere Reserve title by UNESCO, in July 2012.

This place with an area of 300 km² is protected thanks to ECOFAC, a program for the conservation of protected areas. This organization is funded by the European Commission and it monitors the rational use of forest ecosystems in Central Africa and undertakes inventory of biodiversity from this part of the continent.
